About the Billericay Cycling Campaign

Why we cycle

Cycling means lots of different things to lots of different people. We are a varied group of individuals in Billericay who ride for many reasons, including:

  • Quick and practical transport for short journeys
  • Commuting to work and getting the kids to school
  • Exercise and health
  • Sport and adventure
  • Riding alone for meditation and riding with others to socialise

We love the benefits this brings us such as:

  • Building exercise into our daily routines
  • Less stressful and often quicker than driving on congested roads
  • Saves money and wear and tear on our cars
  • Makes us feel good, both physically and mentally

Why we campaign

We recognise there are many barriers to others enjoying the benefits that cycling as brought us. It is also clear that when more people use bikes as transport, everyone wins – including those who don’t have the option of cycling. These wider benefits include:

  • Less congested roads
  • Less wear and tear on the roads (fewer pot holes!)
  • Cleaner air
  • Less demand on public health services

This video from Not Just Bikes explains how non cyclists benefit when more people cycle.

The changes we want to see to help realise the benefits of more cycling are:

  • Improved infrastructure to make cycling safer and more attractive, designed to LTN 1/20 standards
  • Improved facilities for secure storage of bicycles
  • Training to give people the confidence to ride in modern traffic conditions
  • Advice and support with getting the right equipment and maintenance
  • Mentoring and advice to help new riders begin cycling

We’d love to keep in touch. Please join our Facebook group for regular news and updates.
